Add gold to your fine silver jewellery

Adding gold with Keum Boo, Sunday 24 October 2010

Already making jewellery with PMC3 or Art Clay, the mouldable forms of silver, but want to add a little extra to make your work stand out?

Gold jewellery is popular, and sells for a much higher price than silver, but working with gold sheet or wire, or with PMC Gold, is very, very expensive, pushing gold out of the reach of many jewellers.  One alternative is to learn a very economical way of using gold to embellish your PMC3 or Art Clay pieces with a permanent layer of real 24 carat gold.

On this workshop, you will learn how to apply real 24 carat gold to your fine silver jewellery, using the ancient technique of Keum Boo, and will apply a surface finish or patination to your finished piece(s).

You will make at least two items in PMC3, learning how to control your surface texture to create the perfect conditions for successful use of Keum Boo.  You will also have the opportunity to practice the technique yourself on two pieces, using valuable real gold included in the course fee, and will learn how to use abrasives or patination to enhance the contrast between the silver and gold elements.

This is a level 2/3 workshop, and is suitable for you if ONE of the following applies:

  • You have completed (or will have completed by the date of the course) the Sussex Jewellery School's Beginnings in Silver one-day workshop (can remember what you were taught or have practised at home since then!);  OR

  • You have completed a beginner's metal clay day at another college, and can roll clay to a consistent thickness, texture successfully, and can cut, dry, refine and hand-fire your pieces with minimal supervision, and make sterling silver ear wires.

This course is taught by Sarah Jane Whittaker MCSJ Dip PMC, and includes 16g PMC3, sterling silver wire to make earwires and a generous supply of valuable gold foil.  The workshop is strictly limited to a maximum of five students, rather than the usual seven, to ensure more individual tutor attention.
