Duration this is a two-day course, running from 10:00hrs-17:00hrs on each day (see the drop-down menu for available places).
About this course Make moulds from RTV (room temperature vulcanisation) silicone, and cast jewellery in resin. Learn about cold enamel, resins and mould-making. You will also be mixing your own colours and special effects, as you learn how to work with resin. The resins you will work with are non-toxic and odourless, so are safe for everyone (health and safety when working with resin will be covered).
You will be making two kinds of moulds, casting your pieces in resin, de-moulding as well as finishing pieces. This class will cover using resin as cold enamel, using masters to make moulds and casting resin pieces.
By the end of the two days you will understand the principles of cold enamel, RTV (room temperature vulcanisation) silicone moulds and casting in resin.
Why should I take this course? If your aim is to make unique jewellery, this course is for you.
More about the course Over two days, visiting tutor Clare John will show you how to introduce colour to your work, and produce wonderful finishes that are similar to vitreous (traditional, hot) enamel - but with no kiln needed. Traditionally, achieving a good finish in resin required the use of expensive vacuum machines, but Clare will introduce you to a new range of high-quality resin products that do not require the use of expensive machinery or materials, making them ideal for those working on a small scale or at home.
The finishing techniques for both resins, including cutting back, cleaning and polishing will be covered, and Clare will troubleshoot common problems when working with resins.
After booking on this course, you'll be emailed a workshop supplies list, as you will need to bring with you some simple and easily obtained supplies to use as your resin kit. However, all resins needed on your course are included in the course fee. You're welcome to bring your own paper, textile or other elements or part-completed jewellery projects with you, and Clare will advise if they are suitable for use.
